Germany bans online gaming come January 1, 2008

Another mention from Frank Fantini's Gaming Report. More sad news for this industry:

Quote:
GERMANY will ban online gambling starting January 1 and has
reached an agreement whereby its 16 states will maintain their monopolies for lotteries and most forms of betting, according to news reports.

At present, 13 of Germany’s 16 states have proposed laws banning
I-gaming.

Internet gamers consider the new prohibition to violate the European
Union’s law on free trade among member countries, and lawsuits are likely.

I spoke to a friend of mine who works at Intertops, Germany is their market.

The German government has not banned online gaming, they have passed the responsibility onto the states, of which I actually believe there are 32 not 16.

This means that each individual state will have to enact legislation against organisations servicing their residents. They have tried before and failed... I don't see this making much of an impact unless something more drastic happens.

From what I hear this is a National Ban.

The industry is reeling together on this one to pressure them through the E.U.
