Online Poker in California appears to be more certain than ever

According to today's voting results on the California ballot initiatives on the budget, it appears 5 of the 6 ballots are being voted down.

An article in the Sacramento Bee discusses the California ballots and the measures utter defeat.

These measures were an attempt to arrest the exploding deficit the state of California has. US States are not allowed to fall into deficit. (The Federal Government can go into deficit, but the State are forbidden by laws).

With their budget deficit in the tens of Billions of Dollars, legislators were waiting for these initiatives to fail before resorting to more 'desperate measures.'

Online poker in California is one such desperate measure.

So, now, it appears as a result of a lack of a budget that can retard the deficit the State is considered in a crisis. (Some have jokingly alluded to the budget crisis as so bad that legislators will now allow the state to sell crack cocaine on the street to raise revenue).

With other states looking to legalize online poker, and the Federal Government proposing a measure to regulate it, the race will now be on for California to be the first State in the Union to regulate and license poker.

California also has the LARGEST online poker population, with an estimated 3 million online poker players.

The numbers will speak for themselves. Online poker is the only known industry stepping forward to the California legislature asking to be taxed. But there's one catch: license and regulation.

There are very interesting things you learn about when Governments are under fiscal duress.

Apparently the California Department of Corrections (CDCR) is now so broke they will move inmates from State Prisons to Local Prisons. In the USA, Local Jails are packed and have next to zero capacity for additional prisoners.

So, criminals will walk free. Only the super-violent criminals will remain.

FYI: Charles Manson, the serial killer, is currently an inmate at Corcoran State Prison. This guy said on a 20/20 interview that if he gets out he would seek to kill 50 million Americans. There are lunatics out there that still worship Manson. As dumb as the legislators at the State of California are, we 'hope' there is enough grey matter in some legislator's skulls to have enough money to keep the really bad criminals away from society.

Here's another longer term aspect:

Under US law, anyone caught with drugs MUST go to jail. Given the current fiscal climate, California will end up giving that lip-service. They can't afford to jail that many people now.

There will be more crime in California for sure. The police will see little need to aggressively make arrests, because the person will be right back on the street the next day.

If you've never read Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand, I highly recommend it. She describes how Western societies can break down with the demise of the government. Its unbelievable to read. Its even more unbelievable to live through.
