OT: Cannonball Run Article in Wired Magazine

Off topic: I found a very impressive article in Wired Magazine about a guy that wanted to beat the 1983 Cannonball Run record of 32 hours and 7 minutes:

Cannonball Run

(For those outside North America: The Cannonball Run is a driving competition for speed. The winner makes the fastest time driving from New York City to Los Angeles. It is not endorsed and something that is done in secret. Obviously, in order to win, a driver would have to break speed limit laws. Avoiding police on the highway is key to winning....'unofficially' :-) - The best record time is 32 hours and 7 minutes. )

The driver used every modern day tech gadget for a car you can imagine. I discovered that there's all sorts of new counter surveillance stuff you can place on your car. Thermal Imaging systems to detect police vehicles on the side of the road....anti photo covers for license plates (illegal in Florida, Ohio, Illinois and New York State :-( ). Remember in the 1990's we all had radar detectors? Then remember when the cops got the infrared laser when that came out? We all said 'You can't beat the laser.' Apparently, now you can.

If you want to remember owning a car during your college years and taking road trips that involve speed...risking a speeding ticket.....then this is a great read for you.

Enjoy. Cannonball Run

I can't comprehend making that trip in 32 hours.

It's a 2,462 mile journey, which puts you a hair under 77 MPH to get there in 32 hours. But then you have to take into account traffic, detours, refueling and incidentals. You're probably looking at going 110 MPH for 32 hours straight, minimum. How does he intend to break a record like that?

The article said he had to average 90 MPH.

Once your west of Chicago, you should be home free, with large swaths of highway. Utah should be a joke. Once west of the rockies. Its flat. So that's where you would probably be making up for some serious time loss from the east. A BMW like what he had would be doing 120-135 MPH west of the Rockies, easily.

The only catch to the whole project is: 'smokies' and cameras. The guy clearly did his research, hiring a guy from the Transportation Department to give him maps of overpasses, lane widths, etc.. I wouldn't be surprised if he told him where law enforcement cameras were installed.

We're talking 30 years after the movies 'Cannonball Run' and 'Smokey and the Bandit.' The spirit is still the same: SPEED.

I found this You tube Video of what he actually installed in the car. Its a shame Uniden can't legally be the sponsor for his car :-)

The smartest thing he did was the strobe lights.... That was impressive. You'll immediately think its an undercover cop car and get out of the way.

This other You tube video shows the guy clearly has gonads the size of Texas. 120 MPH is sleet rain next to trucks on the highway near Chicago. It reminds me of a quote from a retired jetfighter pilot: "There's old pilots. There's bold pilots. But there are no old bold pilots."

Nice videos. I also watched the one titled Scanner Report in Oklahoma where the police were called in over his driving. The last thing on the video was the question, "Break lights off?". Sounds like he's really done his homework on this one.
